From the moment I opened the book and began reading the first page, I was hooked. I absolutely loved reading about Shirley's experiences. Coming from Tucson, I am in awe of the teachers and the students (Dr. Sprinkles) that Dunbar produced. "From Dunbar to Destiny", is a magnificent story! Reading about Shirley's journey starting from humble beginnings to a triumphant ending is a historical and important journey for all to read about. In fact, I see a movie deal in the future. Shirley has painted a clear picture of what it was like to attend Dunbar and the type of expectations the teachers had for the students. In our day, she was an incredible role model and pioneer for all that should have been equal and just. That she experienced "risk" and conquered the incredible personal and professional challenges that have haunted us all, as we have lived, LOVED, lost, and succeeded...is a tribute to the strength, intelligence and endurance of the Black woman. In reading her beautiful book, I practically used a box of tissues, empathizing with every word... Congratulations, Shirley, it seems that whatever you do, you continue to teach; and you do it in such a way that we learn how to overcome obstacles and still succeed in our various endeavors. Thank you for your excellent example of a strong Black woman and more importantly a strong woman(of any ethnicity) who has successfully attained career, social, and family goals.
